Peptide Storage Best Practices: Temperature, Light, and Handling

How storage conditions affect peptide stability before and after reconstitution — and how to organise your freezer and fridge.

Peptides are sensitive biomolecules. Heat, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, prolonged light exposure, and microbial contamination all accelerate degradation. A consistent storage strategy protects your investment and improves reproducibility across experiments.

Lyophilised (unreconstituted) peptides

Most research peptides ship lyophilised and remain stable for months when kept cold, dark, and dry. Short-term storage at 2–8 °C is acceptable for many compounds; long-term storage at −20 °C or below is preferred when timelines extend beyond a few weeks.

  • Store vials upright in a sealed container with desiccant where appropriate.
  • Keep away from direct light — amber bags or opaque boxes help.
  • Log receipt dates and batch numbers in your lab inventory system.
  • Avoid opening vial seals until you are ready to reconstitute.

Reconstituted solutions

Once in solution, stability windows shorten. Bacteriostatic water extends usable life compared with plain sterile water by inhibiting microbial growth, but chemical degradation still occurs. Many teams aliquot into microcentrifuge tubes and freeze at −20 °C or −80 °C to limit repeated access to the main stock.

Travel and organisation

If peptides move between sites — for example from a central store to a bench lab — use insulated packaging and minimise time outside controlled temperatures. Dedicated peptide boxes with foam inserts reduce breakage from dropped vials.

Signs of degradation

  • Unexpected cloudiness or particulates after reconstitution.
  • Shift in HPLC profile compared with the batch COA.
  • Loss of activity in a validated control assay.
  • Discolouration of lyophilised material.

When in doubt, compare against the Certificate of Analysis and contact your supplier with the batch number. For research use only.
